Empty City Strategy, a famous Chinese Traditional Opera, is also called “Defeating enemy by playing the zither”. It’s a story from chapter 95 of Romance of three kingdoms, which describes a psychological warfare. Under the situation that their side was unable to defend the city, the military counselor deliberately presented a weak-defense city to the enemy. But this situation was doubtful and the enemy hesitated to advance with the fear of ambush. The key to use this very dangerous strategy is to clearly understand the psychology and character of opponent’s commander. Zhuge Liang knew well that his opponent Sima Yi was suspicious so he used this strategy.
